Noticing emphasis

Listen for other people’s most important criteria, or ask them what they consider to be important. Sometimes their words alone will tell you. Notice the way they “mark” out their key criteria among a flow of apparent needs. They may say, “We need you to get back to us soon”. The key word “soon” may be marked out with a verbal emphasis or a hand gesture. Identify the key criteria and check it by repeating it back.

Emphasizing a point What someone else considers as important may be different from your view. Watch the way people show what they consider relevant through their gestures and voice.
